Organization: South Bay Purebred Rescue, San Jose, CA Type of work you do with the organization: Vice President, Foster home, New foster home mentor, Webmaster (www.sbprdogs.org) and Public Education Ambassador which means no one else wants to be on TV or speak in public! How & when did you get started in this lifesaving work? When my 22 year old daughter was 16 she wanted a dog of her own. I insisted she had to volunteer with a local rescue group and foster for the whole summer before she could have a dog. She did all the work but that first dog (Baker a schnauzer/apso was severely epileptic and wasn't adoptable so we kept him after the summer was over and he became Aimee's first dog. He died six months later but our rescue work just kept on. She has since kept 3 rescue dogs and I have kept 2. We still live together. Do you only work with Schnauzers or other breeds too? South Bay is an all breed purebred rescue. Each of our 15 foster homes "specializes" in certain breeds but we take what needs us. I am currently listed for: Affenpinscher, Airedale, Bearded Collie, Bichon Frise, Bouvier, Briard, Black Russian Terrier, Poms, Pekes, papillons, Cavalier King Charles spaniels, Shetland Sheepdogs, Collies (smooth & Rough) Mini Dachshunds (all coat types) Poodles (all 3 sizes) Polish Lowland Sheep Dogs, Tibetian Terriers and Tibetan spaniels, Olde English Sheepdogs, Kommandoric, Chihuahua, Welsh Terriers, Lakeland Terriers, Wire Haired Fox Terriers, Maltese, Yorkies, Silky Terriers, Border Terriers, American Eskimo Dogs, Welsh Corgi (both cardigan & pembroke), Weimaraners, and of course my favorite, Schnauzers (all 3 sizes). I probably missed a few. Did you start the rescue group or do you volunteer at an established one: I started with an established group but eventually a few of us left and founded South Bay together as we wanted to go in a different direction. If you had a "wish list" what would it be? 1) More dedicated foster homes in it for the long haul 2) Money to pay for our Vets & Groomers 3) Better discounts at the Vets 4) that every puppy ever born (purebred & mixed breeds) and placed as a pet would be spayed/neutered before placement 5) Besides a vet for my next husband, I wish everyone would understand that no dog was meant to be kept outdoors.
