Roz Shroyer & Jonnie Hart

Jonnie Hart and I (Roz Shroyer) run the Miniature Schnauzer Rescue Organization in Portland, OR.  We are a non-profit organization and are associated with Oregon Purebred Dog Rescue, which is a committee of Responsible Dog Breeders Association of Oregon and was started as an affiliate of the Portland Miniature Schnauzer Club.

Jonnie started our rescue about 13 yrs ago and I have been doing rescue with her for the last 4-5 yrs.  In the time that I have been doing rescue we have placed approximately 200 mini’s of all ages in loving homes.

Although emotions and sentiment play a big part in rescue, our goal is to place a mini in a loving compatible home in as quick and efficient manner as possible. We have about six foster homes if we need them but we do try to place them as soon as possible so they do not get too confused.  We have to be somewhat business like about this to remain fiscally
healthy (non-profit does not equal broke) and to keep our spouses from wanting to keep every mini they see.

We have received minis from just about any situation that you could dream of.  Most of our dogs come from loving homes that for whatever reason cannot keep them any more.  We have placed dogs from 6 months old to 13 yrs. old.  Most of them were healthy but occasionally we do get dogs in with health concerns and of course they are a lot harder to place.

We do not do animal control or “rescue” a dog from a perceived bad situation. This is what Animal Control is for.  We have to follow the law otherwise it will not be there when we need to use it ourselves.

We do prequalify our adopters and let them know that all of the mini’s that go through rescue are spayed or neutered, current on their shots and have any needed dental work done, etc. We explain our adoption fee schedule. Fortunately most of the people who call us have had minis in the past and are familiar with the breed.  Those that aren't we recommend reading a book on Schnauzers so that they understand the breed and are certain that a mini will fit into their lifestyle.

We try to find the right home for each individual mini.  If we can come close to matching the kind of lifestyle that the dog is used to we can minimize the adjustment time of the move and have a happier more well adjusted dog. I also breed and show mini's so my home is always full of lots of activity and love.
