I originally started a rescue over 6 years ago in affiliation with the Greater Cincinnati Miniature Schnauzer Club. After about 2 years, the club decided that they didn't want to be involved with rescue, so 6 of us left the club and started Schnauzer Friends for Rescue and Adoption Inc. They called me Martin Luther because I kept saying "I have a dream!".  Now some 6 years later, we have foster homes in Columbus Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana & Tennessee as well as here in Cincinnati.

Our main mission is to rescue minis, however we have, in the past, helped with the placement of schnauzer mixes and other breeds. We work in close contact with the standard schnauzer rescue, poodle rescue and have also helped with a giant schnauzer or two. I am right now helping with a rat terrier, or should I say terrorist!!! LOL.

Schnauzer Friends has been lucky to have a great vet who gives us every break he can. We also have a network of groomers who have been wonderful.  Nurto Foods graciously donates a free 5 lb bag of food with each rescue. My bosses at the boarding kennel let us board our "overflow" rescues when all foster homes are full. We do supply the food but they stay free of charge. They also allow us to use their premises for introducing rescues to adoptive families and their pets. We have a great group of dedicated members who, each in their own way, make this rescue what it is today.

Carol, thank you for starting this discussion. Some days I don't even want to answer the phone or look at my emails for fear that there will be another little mini who needs us. (There were 2 more today) But after writing this, I realize that Schnauzer Friends is blessed. We are so lucky that there are so many kind and caring people in our area who help.

My wish list?  Shelters in this area who will work with rescue so we don't have to sneak around to spring shelter dogs. I wish that every person who gets a dog makes it a permanent part of their family. That our throw-away society has more compassion for their little souls and hearts. Dogs give so much and ask so very little in return. Someone once said " make me the person my dog thinks I am!" Let each of us live by that. And I wish that all rescues organizations were as blessed as this one. One last wish, I'm embarrassed to say.........more people willing to transport since I don't do expressways. <smile>
